Cheltenham Poetry Festival

A festival for the community, from the community

Cheltenham Poetry Festival is designed to promote community engagement and cohesion, and provide art activities for every part of the community. It recognizes and celebrates diversity in its wide and eclectic programming.

The festival team have worked with a local neighbourhood project to ascertain which groups would benefit from an inclusive arts festival. We have designed workshops that will aid community and ethnic cohesion, and have developed ways of reaching these groups.

In 2011 the poetry festival's Youth Slam and workshop programming enhanced literacy and encouraged an engagement with the arts. The adult programming promoted self expression and empowerment.

In 2012 the festival will again increase opportunities for people to take part in artistic activities and create new work.

The poetry festival is designed to support the emergence of a diverse range of artists from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, and not to focus specifically on commercial book sales. In 2012 the festival will give opportunities for unpublished or recently published poets to read and distribute their work.

The festival is also planning an extensive outreach programme, with the aim of addressing and helping to dissolve economic, age related and physical barriers to cultural inclusion.
