Funding from Cheltenham Borough Council has made it possible for Cheltenham Poetry Festival to run a series of innovative workshops within the community to encourage literacy and improve health and wellbeing within vulnerable groups.
The cornerstone of the festival’s outreach programme for the 2012 festival is a series of workshops involving school age children, the elderly and housebound, as well as people with certain forms of disability.
The festival team are working with school age children, teaching them to learn and recite some of the poetry that
their grandparents would have learned at school then taking them into care and nursing homes, and other
venues, to meet some of the residents and recite the poetry that they have learned.
The scheme is run by Angela France, an extremely experienced poet and organiser of outreach and community-based literature projects.
